The Raid on Tabūk: The Prophet tempts the fighters by the capture and rape of blond women in order to conquer Tabūk
9 Anno Hijra
“Among them there are some who say, ‘Give me permission, and do not put me to temptation.’ Look! They have already fallen into temptation and indeed hell besieges the faithless.” (Sūrah Repentance 9: 49)
Commentary of Ṭabarī:
Abū Jaʿfar said: It was said that this verse was revealed about Al-Jadd b. Qays.
The meaning of the divine saying “there are some”, is that some of the dissimulators “who say give me permission”, i.e., permission to stay here and not go out with you to battle. “And do not put me to temptation”, means: do not entice us by letting us look at the women and daughters of Banū Al-Aṣfar (lit. the blond folk; i.e., the Byzantines), for I am fond of women. If I go out, I may commit sin because of this.
… On the authority of Mujāhid, with regard to Allāh’s saying: “Give me permission, and do not put us to temptation,” he said: The Messenger of Allāh, peace be upon him, said, “Join the raid on Tabūk and you will take as booty blond girls and the women of the Byzantines! Al-Jadd said: “Give me permission, and do not put me to temptation by women.”
… On the authority of Ibn Jurayj, Mujāhid said: The Messenger of Allāh, peace be upon him, said: “Join the raid and you will take as booty blond girls and the women of the Byzantines!” then he mentioned something like it.
… He was a dissimulator (i.e., a hypocrite pretending to be a believer) called Al-Jadd b. Qays. The Messenger of Allāh, peace be upon him, said to him: “This year we invade Banū Al-Aṣfar (the Byzantines) and take concubines and handmaids from among them.” Al-Jadd b. Qays said: “O Messenger of Allāh, give me permission, and do not put me to temptation.

Commentary of Al-Baghawī:
This was revealed about Jadd b. Qays the dissimulator. When [p. 57] the Prophet, peace be upon him, was preparing for the raid on Tabūk, he said: O Abū Wahab, would you like to fight Banū Al-Aṣfar? Meaning the Byzantines. You can take concubines and handmaids from among them. Jadd said: “O Messenger of Allāh, my folk know that I am a man who is fond of women. I fear that if I see the daughters of Banū Al-Aṣfar (known to be blond), I won’t be able to bear up against them. Give me permission to stay, and do not put me to temptation by them, and I will assist you with my money.”

Commentary of Al-Qurṭubī:
... Ṭabarī provided a chain or narrators proving that the Messenger of Allāh, peace be upon him, said: “Join the raid and you will take as booty blond girls and the women of the Byzantines!” Al-Jadd replied: “Give me permission, and do not put us to temptation by women.” But the second intention (i.e., do not put us to temptation by women) is different from the first (i.e., Give me permission); it is more like dissimulation and opposition.

Comment:
As we have seen, commentators unanimously agree that the reason for revealing the verse “Among them there are some who say, ‘Give me permission, and do not put me to temptation.’ Look! They have already fallen into temptation and indeed hell besieges the faithless,” is that right before the Battle of Tabūk, the Prophet wanted to encourage Muslims to join the raid. He tempted them by promising them that this time the captives would be blond Byzantine women. How can this be a heavenly teaching?
There is no doubt that, as far as blond women are concerned, the Messenger of Allāh succeeded in motivating Muslims to raid Byzantine territories. Perhaps a picture such as this was what filled their imagination as they were on their way to battle.
